The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services contract language stipulates that the specimen collection forms [consisting of dried blood spots (DBS) on filter paper and attached information] shall be retained for 5 years, followed by incineration. During the first year, the DBS shall be retained at -70 degrees C, then for 4 additional years at room temperature.
